What people are researching it for
People are researching Melanotan-2 mainly for tanning and darker skin pigment.
Tan. Perform. Feel more.
- What is Melanotan II?
- Checklist: High potency
- Checklist: 7 amino acids
- How does it work?
- Note: MT-II works systemically, which is why it can affect more than just skin pigmentation.
- Common research use cases
- Not written out in this text version.
- How it's used in research
- Route: Subcutaneous (most common)
- Route: Intranasal (also used)
- Route: Oral (less common)
- Common dosing: 100 to 500 mcg per day
- Common dosing: Many start lower and adjust gradually
- Common dosing: Duration varies (weeks to months)
- Often combined with: Natural sunlight
- Often combined with: Tanning beds
- Often combined with: Other research peptides (e.g., PT-141)
- There is no standardized dose or protocol. Research use should be thoughtful, tracked, and adjusted based on individual response.
- What users report
- Keep in mind: Responses vary widely
- Keep in mind: Side effects are common
- Keep in mind: Not everyone responds
- Keep in mind: Long-term safety is unknown
- Keep in mind: Product quality can vary
- Key takeaway
- It can help you tan faster and often with less UV exposure, but it also comes with potential side effects and important unknowns, especially regarding long-term skin safety.
- The bottom line
- Melanotan II shows strong potential in research for tanning, libido, appetite, and more, but it's not without risks. Use only high-purity peptides, follow a research-focused approach, and set realistic expectations.

This visual sets Melanotan-1 and Melanotan-2 side by side: timing, amounts and side effects.
Melanotan I and Melanotan II, next to each other.
Same goal. Different profiles.
- What are they?
- Not written out in this text version.
- Key differences
- Melanotan II: More systemic effects
- Melanotan I: Governed by MC1R activity (primarily)
- Melanotan II: Broader receptor activity (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R)
- Common uses
- Neither peptide replaces sunscreen or safe sun practices.
- Timeline & research dosing
- Dosing and response vary widely by individual. These are typical ranges reported in research and user communities.
- Melanotan I: Typical dose: 250 to 1,000 mcg/day
- Melanotan I: Noticeable results: often 1 to 3 weeks
- Melanotan I: Full effect: 4 to 8+ weeks
- Melanotan I: Gentler, more gradual tanning response
- Melanotan II: Typical dose: 250 to 500 mcg/day
- Melanotan II: Noticeable results: often within days
- Melanotan II: Full effect: 2 to 4 weeks
- Melanotan II: Faster, more dramatic tanning response
- There is no standardized dose or protocol. Use should be thoughtful and based on individual response.
- Side effects & considerations
- Both peptides can cause side effects. MT-II is more likely to cause systemic effects due to broader receptor activity.
- Melanotan I: Mild nausea (less common)
- Melanotan I: Flushing
- Melanotan I: Some darkening of freckles and moles
- Melanotan I: Generally fewer systemic effects
- Melanotan I: Slower, more controlled results
- Melanotan II: Nausea and flushing (common)
- Melanotan II: Appetite suppression
- Melanotan II: Increased libido / erections
- Melanotan II: Yawning and fatigue
- Melanotan II: More frequent darkening of freckles and moles
- Melanotan II: Faster, deeper pigmentation
- Individual responses vary. Stop use and consult a healthcare professional if you experience concerning side effects.
- Key takeaway
- MT-I is often preferred for a milder experience and more gradual, natural-looking results. MT-II is typically chosen for faster, more dramatic tanning, but comes with a higher likelihood of systemic side effects.
- The bottom line
- Melanotan I and Melanotan II can both enhance tanning and may offer additional benefits, but they have different timelines, side effect profiles, and overall experiences. Start with clear goals, use high-quality products, and take a cautious, informed approach.

Fast tanning tops the reports, along with sex drive changes, nausea and flushing.
Community reports
People often report fast tanning and darker pigment. Libido changes, nausea, flushing, and unwanted sexual effects also appear frequently.
Community reports
People use MT-2 mainly to get a fast, deep tan without needing much sun, and a large number also report a strong boost in sex drive/erections as a side benefit (or main draw, for some men); a smaller group uses it hoping it helps with appetite/weight loss. Reports on tanning are very consistent; reports on libido are strong and consistent in men but split for women, and side effects like nausea, flushing, and new moles are widely and repeatedly mentioned.
Early studies in people found it can darken skin and change sexual response.
Early human studies found effects on skin pigment and sexual response.
A faster, stronger tanning peptide than MT-1. It can also trigger arousal and erections as a side effect, which for some people is the main draw.

Safety notes
Tested in people. How many took part, for how long, and who they were still matter.
- You have trouble breathing or wheezing, or your face, lips, tongue or throat swell.
- You get hives away from the injection site, or feel severely dizzy or faint.
For these signs, call 911 or your local emergency number.
- Priapism (an erection lasting more than 4 hours) is a real medical emergency; go to the ER. Industry perspective
- Redness spreads, or heat, swelling or pain keeps growing where you injected.
- A lump keeps growing or does not go away, or you see pus or red streaks.
- You have a fever or chills, or feel sick all over.
- Heart disease or high blood pressure. It can affect blood pressure and heart rate. The cited commentary says to avoid it with heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat, and to talk to your doctor first with any heart condition.
- Melanoma, skin cancer, or many or changing moles. It darkens moles as well as skin, which can hide changes that matter with a melanoma history.
- Be cautious combining MT2 with diuretics (common in bodybuilding show prep) while in the sun. Industry perspective
- Skip it if you have a melanoma history, a high mole burden, or are pregnant (shared caution with MT1), and if choosing one, the cited commentary says use MT1 instead. Industry perspective
- MT2 causes more nausea, flushing, and increased heart rate than MT1 because it hits more . Industry perspective
- Never combine with PT-141 on the same day. Nausea, flushing, or cardiovascular changes can be severe. Industry perspective
- Very high doses (case report: 6 in one shot) have caused rhabdomyolysis and kidney injury requiring intensive care. Industry perspective
- Avoid nasal-spray MT2: a 2025 case report described a mucosal melanoma in the nose/mouth area linked to use. Industry perspective
- Long-term, large-scale safety data on MT2 simply doesn't exist the way it does for MT1's implant registries.
- Cancer risk with MT2 is genuinely unresolved: there are human case reports of problems, but also animal data showing it can shrink existing melanomas, so the cited commentary says nobody really knows.

A stronger cousin of Melanotan-1, it acts on more receptors and was never approved.
Melanotan-2 is a smaller, more potent cousin of Melanotan-1, built from just the core active piece of the tanning hormone. Unlike MT-1, it hits several hormone at once, which is why it produces faster, more intense tanning along with appetite and arousal effects MT-1 doesn't. It was never approved as a drug anywhere and is given as an injection.
